TIA/EIA-568-B is a family of Telecommunications Standards that the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) TR-42 Technical Committee has broken the standard into a series of documents known as B.1, B.2 and B.3. The '568-B.1 document contains the information needed for designing, installing, and field testing a generic structured cabling system. The '568-B.2 and '568-B.3 documents contain manufacturing and component reliability test specifications for cable, patch cords and connecting hardware. The '568-B.3 document was published in April 2000 and is applicable to optical fiber components. The '568-B.2 document specifies the electrical and mechanical requirements of unshielded (UTP) and screened (F/UTP) balanced twisted-pair components. The standard addresses requirements for category 3 and 5e cabling and component requirements. Both '568-B.1 and '568-B.2 were published in June 2001. Within customer premises, the importance of the cabling infrastructure is similar to that of other fundamental building utilities such as heating, lighting and mains power. As with other utilities, interruptions to service can have a serious impact. Poor quality of service due to lack of design foresight, use of inappropriate components, incorrect installation, poor administration or inadequate support can threaten an organization's effectiveness. Historically, the cabling within premises comprised both application specific and multipurpose networks. The original edition of this standard enabled a controlled migration to generic cabling and the reduction in the use of application-specific cabling. The subsequent growth of generic cabling designed in accordance with ISO/IEC 11801 has: a) contributed to the economy and growth of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), b) supported the development of high data rate applications based upon a defined cabling model, and c) initiated development of cabling with a performance surpassing the performance classes specified in ISO/IEC 11801:1995 and ISO/IEC 11801 Ed1.2:2000. NOTE ISO/IEC 11801, edition 1.2 consists of edition 1.0 (1995) and its amendments 1 (1999) and 2 (1999). This second edition of ISO/IEC 11801 has been developed to reflect these increased demands and opportunities. This International Standard provides: a) users with an application independent generic cabling system capable of supporting a wide range of applications; b) users with a flexible cabling scheme such that modifications are both easy and economical; c) building professionals (for example, architects) with guidance allowing the accommodation of cabling before specific requirements are known; that is, in the initial planning either for construction or refurbishment; d) industry and applications standardization bodies with a cabling system which supports current products and provides a basis for future product

ANSI/TIA-568.1-D contains requirements that facilitate the planning and installation of a structured cabling system in a commercial building environment. The structure for commercial building cabling is based on the generic cabling system structure specified in TIA-568.0-D. Performance and technical criteria for balanced twisted-pair cabling systems are specified in TIA-568-C.2. Performance and technical criteria for optical fiber cabling systems are specified in TIA-568.3-D. ANSI/TIA-568-C.3 specifies performance and transmission requirements for premises optical fiber cable, connectors, connecting hardware, and patch cords. Optical fiber transition methods used to connect cabling from an array connector to simplex or duplex connectors are also specified. ANSI/TIA-568-C.3 “Optical Fiber Cabling Components” was developed by the TIA TR-42.8 Telecommunications Optical Fiber Cabling Systems Subcommittee (which has since been merged with the TR-42.11 Optical Systems Subcommittee) and published in June, 2008. A 5-page errata sheet that corrects errors related to the deletion of unused definitions, adds revised text supporting duplex and array polarity figures, and clarifies mating cycle test specifications has been issued to supplement the published content of TIA-568-C.3. Significant changes from the previous edition of this Standard include adoption of the ISO nomenclature for optical fiber cable types (i.e., OM1, OM2, OM3, OS1, and OS2), the addition of recommended connector strain relief, housing, and adapter color coding to support installations when color is used to identify fiber type, and an increase in the specification of minimum OFL bandwidth for 62.5/125 Ωm optical fiber cable from 160 MHz•km at 850 nm to 200 MHz•km at 850 nm.
