Fluke DSX-5000 vs DSX-8000
ATEC BLOG
Fluke, a leading manufacturer of certification, troubleshooting, and installation tools for professionals, just released the latest in copper cabling equipment, the DSX-8000 CableAnalyzer. Now part of the Versiv Cable Certification Family, the DSX-8000 joins the likes of the DSX-5000, an earlier generation cable analyzer, to offer accurate, error-free certification.

The DSX CableAnalyzer Series offers copper test solutions for the testing and certification of twisted pair cabling for up to 40 Gigabit Ethernet deployments, and can handle any cabling system. Anyone with various skill levels, from expert technicians and project managers to those that are new to the field, will feel comfortable operating the intuitive DSX Series analyzers. Both the DSX-5000 and DSX-8000 are available to rent from Advanced Test Equipment Rentals, and although they're similar in many aspects, each has its own specific capabilities. Here's how they compare.

Certifications:

The DSX-5000 certifies twisted pair Cat 5e, 6, 6A and Class FA cabling with limits up to 1000 MHz. The DSX-8000 certifies twisted pair Cat 5e, 6, 6A, Cat 8 and Class I/II cabling with limits up to 2000 MHz. Certifying a cabling system is part of a process that starts with system design and ends with system acceptance. The more certifications a single tool can handle, the more you’ll be able to accomplish, in less time – meaning you’ll save money with better efficiency. Because of this improved testing capacity and efficiency, the Versiv series is able to reduce costs by up to 2/3, adding 10% to the bottom line of every job.

Cat 6A Test Time:

The DSX-5000 offers a Cat 6A test time of 10 seconds – a very attractive feature for any cable certifier. The DSX-8000 is able to shave off two seconds, and can test for Cat 6A in just eight seconds flat – meaning you’ll be able to test more, in a shorter amount of time. The faster the process of testing and certifying cabling goes, the more profitable you'll be.

Cat 8 Test Time:

While the DSX-5000 cannot test to Cat 8 field testing standards, the DSX-8000 can – and it's the first field tester in the world that’s been independently certified and endorsed to meet all the requirements of Category 8. If you need to test to both Cat 6A and Cat 8, the DSX-8000 is the way to go. You’ll be able to complete both sets of tests efficiently and accurately. Quickly get a Pass or Fail result and easily review individual test parameters by value or drill into specific areas on a graph.

HDTDX/HDTDR Diagnostic Test Times:

For both the Fluke DSX-5000 and DSX-8000, the testing time for HDTDX and HDTDR diagnostics is about three seconds. Endorsements by cabling vendors across the globe ensure that Versiv is the fastest way to project completion and system acceptance. The DSX CableAnalyzer Series is the first field tester to report distance to any shield integrity issues, offering you a clear and accurate report of the screen continuity. This is essential, particularly in data centers and Cat 8 installations where screen continuity is critical to maintaining alien crosstalk performance of screened cabling. Use the DSX CableAnalyzer Series to quickly locate return loss or shield faults on any given link, so that you can get right back to work.

Level V Accuracy (1 GHz) and Level V2 Accuracy (2 GHz):

Both the DSX-5000 and DSX-8000 are capable of Level V and V2 accuracy. This means that with either tool, designers and installers will be able to save time as well as increase efficiency and profitability. And, the Fluke DSX-5000 and 8000 are easy enough to operate that anyone, from a skilled technician to the newest one on the job, can easily perform tests across multiple media types.

Channel Adapter and Permanent Link Adapter:

The Fluke DSX-5000 offers a channel adapter and permanent link adapter up to a 1 GHz range. The DSX-8000 can accommodate these features up to a 2 GHz range. Though the DSX-8000 offers advanced test functionality and speed, both the DSX-8000 and DSX-5000 are exceptional choices for your copper certification needs.
