ESD Guns | ESD Simulators Overview (Electrostatic Discharge Test)
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) simulators also known as “ESD Guns” play an important role in product development and fulfill pre-compliance or compliance testing for ISO 10605, IEC 61000-4-2, MIL-STD-461G CS118, and other ESD test standards. ESD Guns/simulators produce a severe high voltage, high current, and high frequency content pulse. When the pulse is applied to the Equipment Under Test, design deficiencies are exposed as automatic resets, program crashes, other unusual forms of product operations or by the product not meeting specifications.
Electrostatic Discharge Testing is required to receive a CE mark, allowing products to be sold in the market. There are several different types of simulators to choose from, including those that test components according to the charged device model (CDM), human body model (HBM), or machine model (MM), and system level tests as described in standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 or ISO 10605.
The Charged Device Model (CDM) simulates situations that may happen in manufacturing environments. The Human-Body electrostatic test model (HBM) creates the environment of a human body discharging static electricity, and then monitors how the device under test (DUT) responds. The Machine Model (MM) testing examines how the DUT responds to electrostatic discharge from another nearby machine.
Engineers and technicians rely on ESD guns to quickly gain valuable information about the robustness of the equipment under test (EUT) to external transient electromagnetic phenomena. Speed up product development time by identifying product design weakness sooner with ATEC’s ESD Gun/ESD Simulator inventory. Advanced Test Equipment Rentals carries ESD Guns from the top manufacturers such as Teseq, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Haefely Hipotronics, and EM Test.
