Though fiber optic cables are capable of transmitting information very quickly over long distances, they are vulnerable to contamination from water, oil, or dust. Fiber optic inspection scopes, also called optical power meters, are used to examine the cable's core, which is then cleaned using a cleaning kit to prevent disruption.
Even when invisible to the naked eye, a contaminant can block or permanently damage a fiber and cause a network outage. If experiencing high connector loss, high reflectance, or contaminated transceivers, there may be a contaminated fiber. For best results and longevity, fiber optic cables should be regularly inspected—even brand new—and cleaned every time they are spliced or certified, and when troubleshooting.
Inspection is the first step of the fiber installation process, usually involving a light source and power meter. It is followed by Tier 1 certification with a fiber certifier, also called an
OLTS.
Optical Power Meter Features
- Automatic scanning and testing of fibers
- Support for both multimode and single-mode cables
- Simultaneous testing capabilities
- Optical power and loss measuring capabilities
- Easily interpreted test results, requiring minimal navigation
- User-friendly interface display
- Durable exterior
- Multiple light source usage
How To Use A Fiber Optic Inspection Scope
- Set the reference.
- Make sure the device’s components are clean.
- Connect test cord to power meter and light source.
- Make sure light source is on correct mode.
- Make sure you use the correct loss limit.
- Connect test cords to the end of designated cable.
- Take measurements.
- See if the cable passes the loss criteria.
- Look for fibers with excessive loss.
- Document results.

What Are Some Benefits Of An Optical Power Meter Rental?
Not only is it more cost-effective to rent an optical power meter, but customers also do not have to worry about equipment upkeep or maintenance. They are also useful if only a few tests are needed, as opposed to a full network requiring daily examinations.
